Mission
Statement
CABI is dedicated to improving human welfare world-wide through
the dissemination, application and generation of scientific knowledge in support
of sustainable development, with emphasis on agriculture, forestry, human health
and the management of natural resources, and with particular attention to the
needs of developing countries.
- Inter-governmental, not-for-profit organization.
- 40 Member Countries including 13 in Africa, 15 in Asia-Pacific and 7 in
South America & Caribbean.
- · A scientific organization, publisher and development assistance agency.
- Largely self-supporting financially, from sale of publications, scientific
projects and other sources of income.
- Member Countries received price discounts on publications and services,
and other benefits.
Established in 1928, it is a Center for Agriculture and Biosciences,
providing information, scientific and development services, throughout the world,
for all those involved in agriculture, forestry, human health and the conservation
of natural resources.

- Originally established to assist agricultural development in Commonwealth
countries
- Granted international status in 1985 and since then several non-Commonwealth
countries have joined (Indonesia, Hungary, Vietnam, Myanmar, Colombia, The
Philippines, Chile and the People's Republic of China).
Finance
- CABI has no core funding.
- Only 2.5% of its annual budget comes from Member Country contributions.
- More than 90% of its income is earned from an information publishing programme
and funding of scientific projects.

Information for Development (IFD)
Formally established in 1996.
Purpose: to assist the less-developed countries (particularly CABI Members)
to build, manage and sustain efficient scientific information systems; Distinct
programme from the Publishing Programme, with different policies and strategies.
Programme priorities:
- Capacity Building ; intelligence on user needs in developing countries;
advice, technical assistance, training
- Sponsorship and product sales; delivery of CABI products and services through
sponsorship; direct sales to developing countries through consortia.
- New products; regional databases (Latin America, Africa); Compendia.
