AgroWebBelarus - the Navigator for the National Web Resources in Belarus
Golubev, VladimirDirector, Belarus Agricultural Library, Minsk, BELARUS

AgroWebBelarus has been created by the BelAL (Belarus Agricultural Library). It has been also available via the Internet site of the Central Scientific Agricultural Library in Moscow, Russia. In Belarus, in general, Internet sites are still very rare. Amongst 11 independent information centers only the BelAL operates such a site. Amongst 8 agricultural universities in Belarus only one has an Internet site. None of 30 agricultural colleges, 20 research institutes, and 10 experiment stations have Internet sites, and nor does the Academy of Agricultural Sciences. There are only 6 sites related to agriculture. 3 have been maintained by ministries and 2 by non-governmental organizations.

BelAL's AgroWebBelarus is trying to connect different Web pages of educational, scientific and information institutions in Belarus. Brief directories and guidebooks to education and science in Belarusian agriculture have been organized. The menu offers a choice of viewing education degrees, and also a list of universities and colleges in Belarus. Each entry contains standard data on address, telephone and fax numbers, e-mail, names of heads of departments, and information on education specialization in each respective institution. Information on research institutes has been organized in the similar way. The directory of the Academy of Agricultural Sciences of Belarus has also been prepared. It contains information about the Academy, and brief data on national as well as foreign members of the Academy. The Library has started to extend the presentation of academicians by presenting brief biographies with photos and bibliographies. Some general data on the state of agriculture in Belarus have also been provided as an information for foreign users. The whole site has been originally prepared in English and has not been translated into Russian.

In the conditions of scarcity of Web sites in Belarus the AgroWebBelarus is trying to convey at least some basic information on institutions and people which represent intellectual capacity of the country. It is desired that this information, which has been generated by the BelAL, become in due time available via genuine sites, created by each respective institution. (http://www.belal.minsk.by)
